1700 Mandtalsliste - Frederiksborg Amt
(1700 Census of Men - Frederiksborg Amt)

Archive Designation: Landsarkivet for Sjælland, Frederiksborg Amt og Birks Antegnelser, Mandtalsliste 1700 Nr. 955

In 1700 Frederiksborg County was made up of 26 Parishes (14 parishes, 12 Annex Parishes), an area also called Frederiksborg Amts Birk. There were 77 villages. Property was categorized as 13 mills, 332 whole farms, 438 half farms. Property ownership in the county was divided as follows:

Land Ownership Percentage of County Lands
The crown 85
Private land owners and millers 9
Church, Priests, and Sextons 5
Forrest lands

The most private ownership was in Jørlunde Parish. Other parishes with some private land ownership were: Græse, Udde Sundby, Lynby, Tjæreby, Uvelse, and Torup.

The total male population of Frederiksborg County at this time was listed as 3765. If the age is listed in parenthesis it means the boy was mentioned and his age listed, but he was not counted for statistics as he was not living at home and would have been counted where he was living.

Here are some things I thought were interesting:

bullet

Renters (Indester) often included the father or extended family of the person on a farm.

bullet

Apparently ministers and soldiers were exempt although their sons are generally listed. They may be mentioned, but were not counted in the statistics.

bullet

There were more boys under ten (1076) than in other age categories. There was also nearly double the number of farmers (796) as compared to cottagers (391) and renters (344).

bullet

Many children were working as farm hands (tjeneste dreng) when 7-14 years old (in 1800s they were nearly always 14 years old when they first left home).

bullet

Children were often not listed from oldest to youngest as in later census records.

bullet

One boy in Strø was listed as in the East Indies (Gert Christensen)

bullet

There were a few very old farmers and cottagers who appear to be still running their farms and hadn't turned them over to children or younger people yet. For example Mogens Pouelsen in Lynge Parish was 93 and a cottager, Jens Andersen in Grønholt was 84 and a farmer, etc.

The information is listed in the same format as the original with the old archaic spellings for the most part. Check out the translation pages to see what these words mean. The only exceptions are that the words tjenestekarl and tjenestedreng are abbreviated tjk and tjd respectfully. Also in some cases the end of the surname is abbreviated in the original and written out in full in this transcript. Otherwise you will find this transcript for the most part a literal extract of the original.

Following are the parishes that made up Frederiksborg County at that time with links to extracts of the original census (entire report dated 24 Dec 1700):

For a paper copy of the extract to this census (213 pages) send $30 to Gary Horlacher, 4065 W. 3670 S., West Valley City, UT 84120. The book includes a wonderful place and name index (first and last name). The book is actually an excellent tool, especially with the index, making it in many ways even more useful than this Internet site. The $30 only covers the cost of publishing and postage. Cash is fine, especially from those oversees.
